The article is a report on a one-day meeting held by the British Society for the History of Mathematics and the London Mathematical Society at Oxford on February 11, 1995 to mark the centenary of Arthur Cayley's death. The author cleverly joins his summaries of the separate lectures together to sketch out Cayley's biography, his scientific work and his impacts on mathematics. He especially appreciates Cayley as the first mathematician who opened up ``Continental mathematics to an Anglophone audience''.
