Shortly before his death, Thomas Jan Stieltjes (1856--1894) conducted significant research into continued fractions. This culminated in his masterwork, Recherches sur les fractions continues [Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse 8, J1--J122 (1894); 9, A1--A47 (1895), reviewed in JFM 25.0326.01]. The first 35 pages are reproduced here, preceded by an introduction in which the editor reviews the circumstances of its publication and the assessment of his work by contemporary and modern mathematicians.
