A subgroup \(A\) of a \(p\)-primary abelian group \(G\) is purifiable if there is a minimal pure subgroup of \(G\) containing \(A\) and such a group is called a pure hull of \(A\). A given subgroup may or may not possess a pure hull and pure hulls may or may not be isomorphic. By now, much is known about purifiable subgroups and their hulls and the author uses this information to generalize a number of published results. The main theorems are the following. Let \(A\) be purifiable in \(G\) with pure hull \(H\). Theorem 2.3: If \(G/A\) is a direct sum of cyclic groups, then \(H\) is a direct summand of \(G\). Theorem 2.5: The hull \(H\) is a summand of \(G\) if and only if \(G[p]/A [p]\) is purifiable in \(G/G[p]\). Theorem 3.1: If \(H\) is in fact a summand of \(G\), then all pure hulls of \(A\) are direct summands, have a common direct complement and are isomorphic. Furthermore, an example is given of a group \(G\) that is not a direct sum of cyclics but contains a purifiable subgroup \(A\) such that \(G/A\) is a direct sum of cyclics.
