\textit{J. Panvosky} and \textit{D. L. Richardson} [J. Comput. Appl. Math. 23, No. 1, 35-51 (1988; Zbl 0649.65048)] gave two-step implicit methods for the initial value problem \(y''= f(x, y)\), \(y(x_0)= y_0\), \(y'(x_0)= z_0\). The authors show that they are equivalent to certain Runge-Kutta-Nyström methods. They generalize these methods and show important computational advantages of their new formulations such as variable steplength and better behavior in the propagation of rounding errors. Numerical experiments are carried out for the two-body problem.
