The paper concerns with the numerical experiments with under-resolving fine details of shear layers. The numerical simulation of a doubly periodic shear layer described by incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is carried out using the projection method with the Godunov's-type discretization of convective terms and the fourth-order difference scheme for the vorticity-stream function formulation. It is shown that the results of both methods agree well if the shear layer is properly resolved. Otherwise, the smooth solutions provided by the projection method can produce artifacts. A discussion concerning the under-resolution of fine scales of shear flows is presented.
