Let \(\mu, \nu\in (1, \infty)\) and \(c\in (0, \infty)\). A solution of \[ u_t= \Delta(|u|^{\mu- 1} u)- c|u|^{\nu- 1} u \] is a function \(u\in C(\mathbb{R}_+, L^1_{\text{loc}}(f\mathbb{R}^n))\) satisfying the equation in \(D'(\mathbb{R}^{n+ 1}_+)\) and belonging to \(L^\infty_{\text{loc}}(\mathbb{R}^{n+ 1}_+)\). The author proves several existence and uniqueness theorems and provides some examples, which exhibit certain optimality features of his results. Consider e.g. the case \(\nu< \mu\). Then existence can be ensured for all nonnegative initial data \(u_0\) satisfying growth conditions of the form \[ u_0(x)(|x|^2+ \alpha)^{- 1/(\mu- \nu)}\leq [c(\mu- \nu)^2(2\mu)^{- 1} (\mu n+ \nu(2- n))^{- 1}]^{1/(\mu-\nu)} \] a.e. on \(\mathbb{R}^n\), where \(\alpha\) is a positive constant. Uniqueness on layers \(\mathbb{R}^n\times [0, T)\) \((t> 0)\) is obtained under a similar, but more restrictive growth condition, which is required for the solution \(u|_{\mathbb{R}^n\times (0, T)}\) rather than for \(u_0\). The cases \(\mu= \nu\) and \(\mu< \nu\) are also treated.
