[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.] This volume, dedicated to Eli Reshotko by his colleagues, friends and former students on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, is based upon a symposium held in Reshotko's honor in Newport News, Virginia, on July 28, 1991. Correspondingly, the articles in this volume are devoted to research areas to which Reshotko actively contributed. The book is divided into four sections: the first two sections focus on instabilities and transition in subsonic and supersonic flows. The third section deals with developed turbulence, while the final section treats related problems in engineering fluid mechanics. Section 1 starts off with \textit{M. V. Morkovin's} keynote lecture on bypass-transition research. \textit{M. Gaster} and \textit{T. K. Sen Gupta} consider the effect of a periodic point source on boundary layer stability, and \textit{R. R. Mankbadi} uses critical layer analysis to obtain the preferred spanwise wavenumber in subharmonic-type transition. \textit{J. A. Masad} and \textit{A. H. Nayfeh} summarize theoretical studies on the effect of surface imperfections on the primary and secondary instability of subsonic boundary layers. \textit{R. C. Y. Chin} gives a progress report on a hybrid asymptotic-numerical method for solving the Orr-Sommerfeld equation at high Reynolds numbers. \textit{R. G. De Anna} studies the effect of distributed spherical roughness elements on the boundary layer stability by direct numerical simulation. The last two articles in this section are devoted to compressor stability: \textit{W. M. Hosny}, \textit{L. Leventhal} and \textit{W. G. Steenken} consider the active control of system aerodynamic instabilities in a multistage axial flow compressor, while \textit{F. Mc Caughan} uses bifurcation theory to explain the various instability domains of axial flow compressor response. In section 2, \textit{L. M. Mack} reexamines the effect of cooling on flat plate boundary layer stability at Mach number 3, and \textit{N. D. Malmuth} uses combined asymptotic numerical techniques to study hypersonic boundary layer stability. \textit{P. Balakumar} and \textit{M. R. Malik} investigate the effect of Mach number on the disturbances generated by a localized point source, and \textit{H. L. Reed} and \textit{T. S. Haynes} investigate correlation parameters for transition on a rotating cone at low supersonic Mach numbers. In section 3, dealing with turbulence in nonequilibrium flows, \textit{R. G. Deissler} uses concepts and tools from nonlinear dynamics to study turbulence with steady forcing. \textit{Ö. F. Turan} summarizes an experimental study of turbulent flow in a conical diffusor. \textit{U. C. Goldberg}, \textit{D. K. Ota} and \textit{S. R. Chakravarthy} address the question of turbulence modeling in recirculating flows while \textit{H.-W. Shin} provides benchmark quality experimental data for the validation of the computer code CONCERT for recirculating flows. \textit{E. B. Gordon} and \textit{I. Greber} present experimental entrainment rates for a row of isothermal subsonic air jets issuing into a quiescent atmosphere. \textit{G. Raman} and \textit{E. J. Rice} study the instability mode structure of natural jets under conditions of technological relevance, and \textit{L. A. Povinelli} provides an overview of research activity on the application of CFD for hypersonic propulsion systems. In the last section \textit{N. A. Messaoudene} and \textit{J. S. T'ien} study the distribution of small-size particles in a thermophoretically affected flow adjacent to a hot wall, and \textit{Y. Kamotani} analyses numerically the thermocapillary flow studied aboard Spacelab \(\text{USML}-1\) during 1992. \textit{T. H. Winn} presents the design procedure for a large aspect ratio waverider and finally, \textit{U. S. Rohatgi} and \textit{L. Y. Neymotin} assess the validity of geometric scaling of small-scale pressurized water reactor emergency core coolant bypass flow tests to the full scale plant.
