This paper deals with the study of involutive bases of polynomial ideals. These were introduced by \textit{A. Yu. Zharkov} and \textit{Yu. A. Blinkov} [Program. Comput. Softw. 20, No. 1, 34-36 (1994); translation from Programmirovanie 1994, No. 1, 53-56 (1994; Zbl 0828.13020)] inspired by some results of Janet and Pommaret in the theory of partial differential equations. The author shows that the notion of Pommaret basis is an instance of a generalized Gröbner basis concept in graded structures. He formulates and proves some important properties of Pommaret bases by algebraic means. This approach admits a straightforward generalization to algebras of solvable type.
