The author proves isoperimetric inequalities for quermassintegrals (cross sectional measures) for non-convex bounded \(C^2\) domains with appropriate conditions on the boundary. For convex domains such inequalities are due to Aleksandrov and Fenchel. A domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n\) is said to be \(k\)-convex \((k=0, 1, \dots, n-1)\) if \(H_j [\partial \Omega] \geq 0\), for all \(j=0, 1, \dots, k\), where \(H_j [\partial \Omega]\) denotes the \(j\)th mean curvature function of \(\partial \Omega\). If \(B\) is the unit ball in \(\mathbb{R}^n\) and \(V_m (\Omega)\) is the \(m\)th quermassintegral, i.e., the mean integral value of the \(m\) dimensional volumes of the projections of \(\Omega\) on \(m\) dimensional subspaces, the following isoperimetric inequality is proven: \(\left({V_k (\Omega) \over V_k(B)} \right)^{1/k} \leq\left({V_m (\Omega) \over V_m (B)} \right)^{1/m}\), where \(m<k\), and \(\Omega\) is any \((n-m-1)\)-convex domain. The equality holds only if \(\Omega\) is a ball. The techniques used in the paper are new and draw upon the theory of Monge-Ampère type equations.
