Suppose that \(\gamma\) is a Jordan curve in the plane and that \(A\) is a set in the exterior of \(\gamma\). The outer distance between \(\gamma\) and \(A\) is defined to be \[ \text{ext dist}(\gamma, A)= \sup_{z\in \gamma} \inf_\alpha |\alpha|, \] where \(|\alpha |\) is the arclength of \(\alpha\) and the inf is taken over all arcs from \(z\in \gamma\) to \(A\) which lie in the exterior of \(\gamma\). Suppose that \(f\) is a conformal mapping from the unit disk onto a simply connected domain \(D\). For \(r< 1\), let \(\gamma_r\) be the image of \(\{|z|= r\}\) under \(f\). Let \(S(1- r)\) be the area between \(\gamma_r\) and \(\partial D\). The author shows that if \(\partial D\) is bounded or if \(D\) has finite area, then \(\text{ext dist}(\gamma_r, \partial D)\to 0\) as \(r\to 0\). In the case that \(\partial D\) is bounded, lying in a disk of radius \(R\), the limit is uniform in the following sense: there exists a monotone function \(\Phi\) with \(\Phi(0)= 0\) for which \(\text{ext dist}(\gamma_r, \partial D)\leq R\Phi(S(1- r))\).
