In mathematical tomography one of the objectives is to reconstruct a density function on a compact set from the knowledge of certain integrals. If we know a priori that this function is a characteristic function, some reduction in the amount of data required may be obtained [\textit{P. C. Fishburn}, \textit{J. C. Lagarias}, \textit{J. A. Reeds} and \textit{L. A. Shepp}, SIAM J. Appl. Math. 50, No. 1, 288-306 (1990; Zbl 0695.44003)]. In such a situation it is said that the support region \(D\) is a set of uniqueness. It is shown by the authors that if \(D\) is a smoothly-bounded Jordan domain which is a set of uniqueness for every pair of orthogonal directions, then \(D\) is a disc.
