This impressive, nearly 600-page book, presents all problems and solutions of Miklós Schweitzer competitions from 1962 to 1991. This unique higher mathematics competition has been offered annually to college (and high school) students ever since 1949. Contestants are offered 10 to 12 problems, and 10 days to work on them anywhere, at home, in a library, etc. The fascinating list of problem creators reads like who-is-who in Hungarian mathematics: Paul Erdös, P. Turán, Gy. Szekeres, L. Fejes-Tóth, A. Rényi, E. Szemerédi, A. Hajnal, L. Fuchs, A. Kertész, L. Lovász, M. Laczkovich, L. Babai, L. Székely, and many others. The contest's winners went on to become some of Hungary's and the world's leading mathematicians: B. Bollobás, M. Simonovich, L. Lovász, M. Laczkovich, L. Babai, Z. Füredi, I. Ruzsa, and others. The problems are presented chronologically, while the solutions are organized by the field: Algebra, Combinatorics, Function theory, Geometry, Measure theory, Number theory, Operators, Probability, Sequences and series, Topology, and Set theory. The book is a fine source of research-type problems, that would be of interest to all mathematicians, but especially to young ones, who seek a take-off place into their own research. In view of the creative force involved, it is also a treasure for historians of mathematics.
