Sobolev inequality and stability of minimal submanifolds (Q1906555)

The following Sobolev-type inequalities are proved: Theorem 1. Let \(M^n\) be an \(n\)-dimensional minimal submanifold \((n > 2)\) in an \((n + 1)\)-dimensional simply-connected space form \(\overline{M}^{n+1} (b)\) with constant nonpositive sectional curvature \(b\). Then \[ |f|_{2n/(n-2)} \leq {4 \sqrt{b} \over \pi} |\nabla f|_2 \text{ for all } f \in C^\infty_0 (M). \] Theorem 2. Let \(M^n\) be an \(n\)-dimensional algebraic subvariety \((n > 1)\) with a singular set \(\Sigma_M\) in an \((n + 1)\)-dimensional complex projective space \(\mathbb{C} P^{n + k}\) with sectional curvature \(K\), \(1 \leq K \leq 4\). Then \[ |f|^2_{2n/(n - 1)} \leq \left( {8 \sqrt {6} \over \sqrt {\pi}}\right)^2 e^{1/4n} \max \left\{ {\pi^2 \over 4}, n\right \} \omega^{-1/n}_{2x} (|\nabla f|^2_2 + |f|^2_2), \] for all \(f \in C^\infty_0 (M - \Sigma_M)\). The above inequalities are known with different or nonexplicit constants. Using the better constants, the author improves on some estimates already known for stability and index of minimal submanifolds. For instance, he shows that if \(M^n\) is a noncompact, complete minimal submanifold of \(\overline{M}^{n+1}(b)\), \(n > 2\), \(b \leq 0\), and \[ \biggl|\sqrt{(|B|^2 + nb)_+} \biggr|_n \leq {\pi \over 4 \sqrt {b}} , \] then \(M\) is stable; here \(B\) is the second fundamental form of \(M^n\) and \(g_+ = \max (g,0)\).
