The authors established very general discrete Opial- and Wirtinger-type inequalities for functions of \(n\) independent variables. To illustrate the results, we mention one of them. Let \(\mathbb{N}= \{0, 1,\dots\}\). For \(u: \mathbb{N}^n\to \mathbb{R}\) and \(s\in \mathbb{N}^n\) we put \[ \Delta_i u(s)= u(s_1,\dots, s_{i- 1}, s_i+ 1, s_{i+ 1},\dots, s_n)- u(s),\quad \Delta^n u(s)= \Delta_1\cdots \Delta_n u(s). \] Let \(x, X\in \mathbb{N}^n\). We write \(x\leq X\) if \(x_i\leq X_i\), \(1\leq i\leq n\). \vskip3mm If \(1\leq x\leq X- 1\), we put \(\sum^{X- 1}_{x= 1}= \sum^{X_1- 1}_{x_1= 1}\cdots \sum^{X_n- 1}_{x_n= 1}\) (empty sums are taken to be 0). Theorem. Suppose that \(\mu_k\geq 0\), \(\lambda_k\geq 1\), \(k= 1, 2\), are real numbers such that \(\mu_1/\lambda_1+ \mu_2/\lambda_2= 1\). Let \(p(x)\), \(1\leq x\leq X- 1\), be a non-negative function and let \(u_k(x)\), \(0\leq x\leq X\), \(k= 1, 2\), be functions satisfying \(u_k(x)|_{x_i= 0}= 0= u_k(x)|_{x_i= X_i}\), \(1\leq i\leq n\). Then \[ \sum^{X- 1}_{x= 1} p(x)|u_1(x)|^{\mu_1} |u_2(x)|^{\mu_2} \leq 2^{- n} \sum^2_{k= 1} {\mu_k\over \lambda_k} \sum^{X- 1}_{x= 1} p(x) \prod^n_{i= 1} [x_i(X_i- x_i)]^{(\lambda_k- 1)/2} \sum^{X- 1}_{x= 0} |\Delta^n u_k(x)|^{\lambda_k}. \]
