In the collocation method, the solution of a partial differential equation is approximated by a sum of known basis functions over the entire domain of interest. The method works well in plane problems for domains with nearly minimal boundaries, but it has poor numerical properties for more irregular geometries: the elements of the matrix of the matching equations are very unbalanced. Because this unbalanced nature is a result of the asymptotic properties of the basis functions, the generation of subdomain basis functions by a normalizing procedure (successful only in subdomains) is an effective tool to overcome the numerical disadvantages. The construction has been explained for the Fourier-Bessel expansion for the Helmholtz equation, but should be applicable also for other equations, if the asymptotics of the associated basis functions are known.
