The mortar element method for domain decomposition with non-matching grids is discussed. Three preconditioners for the saddle point problems which arise from the treatment of the Poisson equation are presented. Estimates on condition numbers are established, and numerical results for the corresponding preconditioned Uzawa algorithms are given.
