Let \(A : H_1 \to H_2\) be a linear continuous operator with respect to the (separable) Hilbert spaces \(H_1\) and \(H_2\). In order to consider an easier structure of the well-known singular value decomposition for the application to ill-posed inverse problems \(A f = g\) such as the inversion of the Radon transform [see \textit{F. Natterer}, The mathematics of computerized tomography (1986; Zbl 0617.92001)], the author in this paper considers a new approach which generalizes the above concept of decomposition introducing the so-called biorthogonal decompositions (of the first and the second kind) of the operator \(A\). He presents biorthogonal decompositions of the Radon transform with respect to the multivariate Appell polynomials which generalize the univariate system of Gegenbauer ultraspherical polynomials to the multivariate case. Vice versa by application of these decompositions he also obtains some new properties concerning the Appell polynomials. The content of this paper is part of the doctor's thesis of the author [Biorthogonale Zerlegungen der Radon-Transformation mit Appell-Polynomen. Diss. Univ. Dortmund (1992; Zbl 0829.44001)].
