Let \(A\) be an alternative algebra over a commutative ring \(k\). Suppose that there exists a positive integer \(n\) such that \(A\) satisfies all identities that hold by \(n\)-generated alternative \(k\)-algebras. Then the following are equivalent: (i) \(A\) is a solvable algebra; (ii) if \(I\) is a solvable ideal of \(A\) then the center of \(A/I\) is nilpotent; if \(N\) is the associator ideal of \(A\) then \(A/N\) is nilpotent. Particular cases of this result in the situation of a field \(k\) of zero characteristic were considered by I. P. Shestakov, K. A. Zhevlakov, G. V. Dorofeev [see \textit{K. A. Zhevlakov}, \textit{A. M. Slin'ko}, \textit{I. P. Shestakov} and \textit{A. I. Shirshov}, Rings that are nearly associative, Acad. Press, New York (1982; Zbl 0487.17001)]. A related result was obtained by \textit{S. V. Pchelintsev} [Algebra Logic 24, 441-454 (1985); translation from Algebra Logika 24, No. 6, 674-695 (1985; Zbl 0603.17014)].
