The purpose of the paper is to classify or characterize real hypersurfaces \(M\) in a quaternionic projective space \(QP^m\) whose Ricci tensor \(S\) satisfies certain conditions. For any almost Hermitian structure \(J\) in the quaternionic Kähler structure \(V\) of \(QP^m\) denote by \((\Phi, f, U, g)\) the induced almost contact metric structure on \(M\). The author obtains the following results: (1) If \(m\geq 3\) and \(\Phi S= S\Phi\) for all \(J\in V\), then \(M\) is an open subset of a tube around a totally geodesic quaternionic subspace of \(QP^m\). (2) If \(m\geq 2\), then \(M\) has harmonic curvature if and only if \(M\) is Einstein. (3) \(M\) is said to be pseudo Ricci-parallel if there exists some \(0\neq c\in {\mathbb{R}}\) such that \((\nabla_X S)Y= c \sum_i \{g(\Phi_i X, Y)U_i+ f_i(Y) \Phi_i X\}\) holds for any \(X, Y\in TM\) and any canonical local basis \(J_1\), \(J_2\), \(J_3\) of \(V\). If \(m\geq 2\), then \(M\) is pseudo Ricci-parallel if and only if \(M\) is an open part of a geodesic hypersphere in \(QP^m\). (4) \(M\) is said to be pseudo-Einstein if there exist some \(a, b\in {\mathbb{R}}\) such that \(SX= aX+ b \sum g(X, U_i) U_i\) holds for all \(X\in TM\). If \(m\geq 3\), then \(|S|^2\geq \sum (f_i(SU_i))^2+ (\rho- \sum f_i(SU_i))^2)/4(m- 1)\), where \(\rho\) denotes the scalar curvature of \(M\). Moreover, the equality holds if and only if \(M\) is pseudo-Einstein.
