Using a variational principle for \(s\)-numbers, the authors prove estimates of the linear, Gel'fand, and Bernstein \(n\)-widths of a bounded linear operator. Exact values of \(n\)-widths for diagonal operators are determined. Finally, exact values of Bernstein \(n\)-widths for the Hardy-Sobolev classes are calculated.
