    The authors study the effect of a small perturbation on critical one-dimensional Schrödinger operators of the form \(H=- {{d^2} \over {dx^2}}+ V\) on \(\mathbb{R}\), with \(V(x)= {l_1\over x^2}\) for \(x\gg 1\) and \(V(x)= {l_2 \over x^2}\) for \(x\ll -1\), where \(l_1\) and \(l_2\) are constants. Let \(0\not\equiv W\in C^\alpha (\mathbb{R})\) have compact support and define for \(\varepsilon \neq 0\), \(H_\varepsilon= H+\varepsilon W\) on \(\mathbb{R}\). If \(\varepsilon>0\) is sufficiently small, then there exists a unique negative eigenvalue, \(\lambda_\varepsilon\), for \(H_\varepsilon\). The main result of this paper gives the leading asymptotic behavior of \(\lambda_\varepsilon\) as \(\varepsilon\to 0\).
