The authors develop a systematic non-parametric wavelet packet feature extraction procedure that identifies features to be used for the classification of transient signals for which explicit signal models are not available. As an example a feature set is found from a set of acoustic transients consisting of several hours of naturally occurring biologically generated underwater sounds in ambient ocean noise.
