The authors consider a Hilbert space with an indefinite inner product \([\cdot,\cdot]\) induced by an invertible self-adjoint operator \(G\), that is, \([x,y] = (Gx,y)\), and a \(G\)-selfadjoint operator \(A\), that is, \(GA\) is selfadjoint. The principal result is that such \(A\) is uniformly definitizable, that is, \(Gp(A)\) is positive definite and invertible for some polynomial \(p\), if and only if it has entirely real spectrum and every point \(\lambda \) of the spectrum is of determinate type (in plus or minus). Here \(\lambda\) is of plus type if for any unit vectors \(f_n, |Af_n - \lambda f_n|\rightarrow 0\) implies \(\underline{\lim}_{n \rightarrow \infty} [f_n, f_n] > 0.\) The result is applied to a selfadjoint operator polynomial. Let \(A_k \;k = 0, \ldots, l - 1\) be selfadjoint operators. For the monic selfadjoint operator polynomial \(L(\lambda) = \lambda^lI + \sum_{k=0}^{l-1}\lambda^kA^k\), a point \(\lambda_0\) is said to be an approximate eigenvalue of \(L(\lambda)\) if \(0\) is an approximate eigenvalue of the operator \(L(\lambda_0)\). Then the plus type and minus type of an approximate eigenvalue \(\lambda_0\) are defined in a natural way. It is easy to see that the companion operator matrix \[ A = \begin{bmatrix} 0 & I & \ldots & 0 \\ 0 & 0 & \ddots & \vdots \\ \vdots & & & I \\ -A_0 & -A_1 & \dots & -A_{l-1} \end{bmatrix} \] is \(G\)-selfadjoint where \(G = [G_{ij}]\) is defined as \(G_{ij} = A_{i+j -1}\) for \(i + j \leq l, G_{ii} = I, G_{ij} = 0\) for \( i + j > l\). A sample application is that the operator polynomial \(L\) is quasi-hyperbolic, that is, its spectrum is real and consists of points of determinate type if and only if the companion matrix \(A\) is uniformly definitizable.
