    Let \(H\) be the set of all entire functions with the topology of uniform convergence on the compact sets and let \([\exp, a]\) or \([\exp, a)\) be the sets of all entire functions of exponential type at most or less than \(a\) with the natural topology. The function \(f\in H\) is called \(D\)-universal if the set \(\{f^{(n)}: n\in \mathbb{N}\}\) is dense in \(H\). \textit{G. R. MacLane} [J. Anal. Math. 2, 72-87 (1952; Zbl 0049.05603)] proved that \([\exp, 1)\) contains no \(D\)-universal function, while \([\exp, a]\) contains them. \textit{S. M. Dyos Ruiz} [Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 279, 792-795 (1984; Zbl 0599.30059)] gave other proofs of these results which the author improves in this paper. Let \(\varphi: [0; \infty)\to (0, \infty)\) be an admissible function, i.e., a continuous function for which \(\varphi(t)\to 0\) \((t\to \infty)\). For \(f\in H\), define \[ |f|_1= \sup_{z\in \mathbb{C}} |f(z)|e^{- |z|} |z|^{1/2},\;|f|_\varphi= \sup_{z\in \mathbb{C}} \varphi(|z|)|f(z)|e^{- |z|}|z|^{1/2} \] and denote \[ B(\varphi)= \{f\in H: |f|_\varphi< \infty\},\quad B_1= \{f\in H: |f|_1< \infty\}. \] The author proves that there is a \(D\)-universal function in \(B(\varphi)\), while there is no such function in \(B_1\). He proves some more general results and indicate that \([\exp, 1)\subset B_1\subset B(\varphi)\subset [\exp, 1]\) if \(\lim t^{- 1}\log \varphi(t)= 0\) \((t\to +\infty)\).
