Memories and memorials (Q1908680)

The article is a harsh criticism of the publication policies of the ``Jahresbericht'' of the German Mathematicians' Association. The author gives examples for a bias in many memorials published recently in the Jahresbericht, which tend to ignore or suppress the political role of the mathematicians under review, especially, during the Nazi era. The author was provoked to write this paper by a biographical article of \textit{N. Schappacher} and \textit{E. Scholz}, on the ardent Nazi and brilliant mathematician O. Teichmüller in [Jahresber. Dtsch. Math. Ver. 94, 1-39 (1992; Zbl 0751.01013)]. The author wrote a lengthy pamphlet on this article and circulated it among mathematicians, many of them emigrés from Nazi-Germany. The reactions seem to have persuaded the author that he misunderstood somewhat the motives and merits of that particular article. So, the resulting publication under review is much more moderate with respect to the Teichmüller biography, but still, and convincingly so, critical of many other publications in the Jahresbericht.
