Let \(X\) be a real Banach space with norm \(|\;|\) and normalized duality map \(J\). For a multivalued operator \(T:X\to 2^X\) and \(A\subset X\) set \(D(T)=\{x\in X:Tx\neq\emptyset\}\) and \(TA=\cup\{Tx:x\in A\}\) and assume always that \(D(T)\neq\emptyset\). An operator \(T\) from \(D(T)\subset X\) to \(2^X\) is accretive if for every \(x,y\in D(T)\) there exists \(j\in J(x-y)\) such that \(\langle u-v,j\rangle\geq 0\) for every \(u\in Tx\), \(v\in Ty\). An accretive operator \(T\) is \(m\)-accretive if \(R(T+\lambda I)=X\) for every \(\lambda>0\). Let \(\gamma\) denote the Kuratowski measure of non-compactness, defined on the bounded sets of \(X\). A continuous operator \(T\) from \(D(T)\subset X\) to \(X\) is \(k\)-set-contractive (for \(k\geq 0\)) if, for every bounded \(A\subset D(T)\) we have \(\gamma(T(A))\leq k\gamma(A)\). The authors define a \(p\)-regular map as follows: Let \(G\subset X\) be open and bounded and let \(T:D(T)(\subset X)\to 2^X\) be such that \(D(T)\cap G\neq\emptyset\) and \(0\not\in Tx\), \(x\in D(T)\cap\partial G\). We say that \(T\) is \(p\)-regular on \(G\) if for every continuous \(p\)-set-contraction \(h:\overline G\to X\) which vanishes on \(\partial G\) we have \(Tx\ni h(x)\) for at least one \(x\in D(T)\cap G\). The authors state that this definition generalizes the `essential mappings' of \textit{A. Granas} [Rozprawy Mat. 30, 93 p. (1962; Zbl 0111.11001)] and the \(p\)-\(o\)-epi-mappings of \textit{M. Furi}, \textit{M. Martelli} and \textit{A. Vignoli} [Ann. Mat. Pura Appl., IV. Ser. 124, 321-343 (1980; Zbl 0456.47051)]. They apply this definition to inclusions involving multivalued \(m\)-accretive \(L\)-expansive operators and to obtain alternative results for such inclusions. They apply the theory to an example in partial differential equations.
