    Let \(|f|_{p;\alpha,\beta} = |\alpha f_+ + \beta f_-|_p\), where \(f \in L_p\), \(0 < \alpha, \beta < \infty\) and \(f_{\pm} (x) = \max \{\pm f(x),0\}\). For \(N \subset L_p\) and \(f \in L_p\) \[ E(f;N)_{p;\alpha, \beta} = \inf \{|f-u|_{p;\alpha,\beta}, \quad u\in N\} \] denotes the best \((\alpha, \beta)\) approximation of \(f\) by the set \(N\) in the metric \(L_p\). If \(f \in C\) and \(t \geq 0\) we write \[ w_{\pm} (f;t) = \sup \{f(x') - f(x'')): |x' - x''|\leq t,\quad \pm x' \geq \pm x''\} \] and \[ H^{\omega_+, \omega_-} = \{f \in C: w_\pm (f,t) \leq w_{\pm}(t), \quad t\geq 0\}, \] where \(w_+(t)\) and \(w_-(t)\) are moduli of continuity. Let \(T_{2n-1}\) denote the set of trigonometric polynomials of order not exceeding \(n -1\) and \(S_{2n,\mu}\) be the set of \(2\pi\)-periodic polynomial splines of order \(\mu\) of defect 1 with nodes \(k\pi \over n\), \(k \in \mathbb{Z}\), \(n = 1,2,\dots\), \(\mu = 0,1,\dots\). The main result of the authors in the following. Theorem. Let \(w(t)\) be an upward convex modulus of a continuity, \(w_+ (t) = w(t), w_-(t) = w(bt)\), where \(b > 0\) is fixed. If \(n = 1,2,\dots\), \(\mu = 0,1,\dots\), \(N = T_{2n -1}\) or \(S_{2n,\mu}\) then \[ E(H^{w_+, w_-}, N)_{1;\alpha,\beta} = \int^{2\pi}_0 \{R((\varphi_{n,1; a,\beta} - \lambda_1)_+; \textstyle{t\over b}) + R((\varphi_{n,1; \alpha,\beta} - \lambda_1)_-; t) w'(t)\}dt, \] where \(\varphi_{n,1; \alpha,\beta}\) is the periodic integral with zero average value on the period of the even \(2\pi\over n\)-periodic function \(\varphi_{n,0; \alpha, \beta}\) which on the interval \(\left[0, {\beta \pi\over n(\alpha + \beta)}\right]\) attains the value \(\alpha\) and on the interval \(\left[{\beta \pi\over n(\alpha + \beta)},\;{\pi\over n}\right]\) the value \((-\beta)\), \(\lambda_1\) being the constant of the best \((b,1)\)-approximation for the function \(\varphi_{n,1; \alpha, \beta}\).
