The author considers the set of all convex lattice polytopes of the lattice \(L_n = ({1\over n} \mathbb{Z})^d\) in the cube \(J = [- 1,1]^d\). This set can be considered as a subspace of the space of all convex bodies contained in \(J\) and equipped with the Hausdorff metric. Problem: Are for large \(n\) almost all lattice polytopes close to a certain specific convex body, i.e., its boundary, the so-called `limit-shape'? For \(d = 2\) the author gives a positive answer to this problem; more precisely he shows that the limit-shape is the curve \[ \biggl \{(x,y) |\bigl( 1 - |x |\bigr)^{1/2} + \bigl( 1 - |y |\bigr)^{1/2} = 1 \biggr\} \] consisting of 4 parabola-pieces. Problems of this type are by no means artificial and have various relations to geometry of numbers, diophantine analysis, affine differential geometry, mathematical biology, crystallography, and statistical physics. The author also solves some related planar problems, but the case \(d \geq 3\) remains open.
