The fretting fatigue is an important part of the tribology, and it has many applications which are connected with the study of contact joints of different shapes and sizes working under oscillating loads. This results in relative tangential displacements at the interfaces which are resisted only by friction. Then, important problems are the investigations of the slip and stick regions in the junctions. High frequency cyclic regimes cause the bulk tension in addition to the contact forces, and under these conditions the crack initiation and propagation often occur. The investigation of the surface degradation in the dependence on the material combination, stress-strain state, motion amplitude, surrounding fluid/gas temperature, contact geometry, etc. is other important problem of the fretting fatigue mechanics. Ultimately, solutions of the above problems are necessary for foundation of design criteria for any pair of contacting bodies and for the determination of the sites where a crack may initiate. This book discusses in consecutive manner various components of the fretting problem. The first step is devoted to the study of contact sizes and shapes, displacement fields, surface and interior stresses. Here, plane and axisymmetric problems are considered. The second step considers the effects of stick and slip zones at the contact surface under conditions of partial slipping. These contact problems cover the investigation of contacts between dissimilar components and twisting contacts. Since the crack initiation is caused by surface defects, the surface roughness mechanics is considered. Moreover, the friction problem is studied, too. Further, the crack analysis and fatigue problems are discussed, and necessary parameters for description of fretting fatigue cracks are revealed. For monitoring of fretting fatigue crack initiation and propagation, the fretting fatigue tests and apparatus are represented. Finally, the initiation and propagation of cracks under conditions of fretting fatigue are considered. The authors summarize the state-of-the-art and formulate possible criteria for the avoidance of fretting fatigue. On balance, this book with clear and concrete statements of the fretting fatigue problems may be recommended as an introductory course for graduate students and researchers in mechanics, physics and engineering.
