The author characterizes certain Cohen-Macaulay local rings of dimension \(\leq 2\) over which any maximal Cohen-Macaulay module is self-dual. Furthermore he studies self-dual maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules \(M\) over Cohen-Macaulay local rings \(R\) of dimension \(\geq 2\) which satisfy \(e(M)=2 \cdot e(R)\) (so-called ``Auslander \(R\)-modules''). He shows that in case \(R\) is a normal Gorenstein domain, then there is a one-to-one correspondence between the set of orientable Auslander \(R\)-modules and the set of even linkage classes of Gorenstein ideals in \(R\) of height 2. (Assuming that the module has rank \(r\), then ``orientable'' here mean that the \(R\)-bidual of the \(r\)-th exterior power of the module is isomorphic to \(R\).) An essential part of this result goes back to \textit{J. Herzog} and \textit{M. Kühl} [in: Commutative algebra and combinatorics, US-Jap. Joint Sem., Kyoto/Jap. 1985, Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 11, 65-92 (1987; Zbl 0641.13014)]. As an application, the author gets that in a hypersurface singularity which is regular in codimension \(\leq 5\), any Gorenstein ideal of height 2 is a complete intersection.
