The paper presents the postulate of Drucker and a broader one of Il'yushin, with comments concerning the normality of plastic strain increments to locally smooth yield surfaces as well as an associative flow rule for time-independent plasticity. For pressure-independent dilatant material with internal friction (rocks and soils), the yield surfaces do not coincide, two postulates do not apply, a non-associative flow rule is valid, and the plastic strain is assumed to be normal to the plastic potential surface. By investigating infinitesimal stress and strain cycles, the authors conclude that the two postulates are not violated. They study also other features of such cycles (cycle directions, localizations, onset of rupture, stability, etc.). The considered non-associative flow rule is based on the Drucker-Prager yield condition which is dependent on the first two strain invariants and on the plastic potential of the same kind. The hardening and softening ranges are analysed, and the results are applied to the triaxial compression test, together with the influence of the dilatancy factor and the friction coefficient.
