The paper deals with the generalized Jacobi polynomials orthogonal on the interval \([-1, 1]\) with respect to the weight function \[ (1- x)^\alpha (1+ x)^\beta+ M\delta (x+1)+ N\delta (x-1), \qquad M\geq 0, \quad N\geq 0. \] These polynomials are obtained by \textit{T. H. Koornwinder} [Can. Math. Bull. 27, 205-214 (1984; Zbl 0532.33010 or Zbl 0507.33005)]. The authors use an alternative representation for these polynomials in terms of the so-called base polynomials \(\{P_n^{(\alpha+ 1,\beta+ 1)} (x)\}\) to derive the three-term recurrence relation and the second order differential equation. Both are given explicitly. From the alternative representation the authors also derive the distribution of the polynomials in terms of the coefficients of this representation. The methods used are obtained by \textit{J. Wimp} and \textit{H. Kiesel} [Nonlinear recurrence relations and induced orthogonal polynomials (to appear)].
