\textit{C. A. Berenstein}, \textit{R. Gay} and \textit{A. Yger} [J. Anal. Math. 54, 259-287 (1990; Zbl 0723.44002)] have shown that if \(0<r_1\), \(r_2\), and \(r_1+ r_2<R\), then any \(C^\infty\) function or continuous or just a distribution in the ball \(B(0,R) \subseteq \mathbb{R}^n\) could be explicitly recovered from its averages over all possible balls \(B(x,r_j) \subseteq B(0,R)\) (as long as the quotient \(r_1/r_2\) does not belong to a certain exeptional set \(Z_n)\). The present article extends this result to the case where \(\mathbb{R}^n\) is replaced by a real or complex hyperbolic space. It is not a simple generalization. It requires a number of delicate analytic results about special functions. The reviewer feels these technical lemmas may prove very useful for other harmonic analysis problems in these symmetric spaces. Moreover, this paper is very clearly written and, as an elaboration on the author's doctoral dissertation, it can be profitably studied by graduate students interested on this type of problems.
