Let \(M\) be an odd-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold with boundary \(Y\) and let \(S\) be a bundle of Clifford modules over \(M\). It is assumed that the Riemannian metric and the Hermitian product on \(S\) are products in \(N= [0, 1] \times Y\), the collar neighborhood of \(Y\) in \(M\). If \(A\) is a suitable Dirac operator, and \(A_\pm\) the restriction of \(A\) to functions satisfying appropriate boundary conditions on \(Y\), one denotes by \({\mathcal E}_\pm (t, x, y)\) the kernel of \(A\exp (-tA_\mp A_\pm)\). One can then define meromorphic functions \(\eta^A_\pm (s)\) by suitable integration of the trace of \({\mathcal E}_\pm (t, x, x)\). In this paper, the singularities of \(\eta^A_\pm (s)\) are studied. If the collar is replaced by a cylinder of length \(R\), the limit as \(R\to \infty\) of the terms of order 0 of the expression corresponding to \(\eta^A_\pm (s)\) is studied. Finally the authors also apply their analysis to the analytic torsion.
