The paper is concerned with a class of nonlinear second-order differential equations in a Hilbert space that contains as special cases equations of nonlinear elasticity with nonlinear boundary conditions (in particular, the nonlinear Euler-Bernoulli, and von Karman plate equations). A special feature of the abstract setup is the presence of nonlinearities which are neither monotone nor locally Lipschitz. The authors establish the existence and uniqueness of weak and strong local and global solutions. The results are subsequently applied to the Euler-Bernoulli and von Karman models.
