Let \(G\) be a group and let \(Z\) be the centre of \(G\). If \(H\) and \(K\) are subsets of \(G\) such that \(Z\subset H\subseteq K\), \(H\) is said to be weak normal in \(K\) if for each element \(k\) of \(K\setminus Z\) there exists an element \(h\in H\setminus Z\) such that \(kh=hk\). A subset \(H\) of \(G\) is said to be a \(Q\)-complex if for each \(h\) in \(H\), also \(\langle h\rangle\subseteq H\). We say that the weak normality is transitive for the subsets containing \(Z\) (respectively: the \(Q\)-complexes containing \(Z\)) if, whenever \(H\), \(K\) and \(L\) are subsets (respectively: \(Q\)-complexes) of \(G\) such that \(Z\subset H\subseteq K\subseteq L\), \(H\) is weak normal in \(K\) and \(K\) is weak normal in \(L\), then \(H\) is weak normal in \(L\). In this paper the author characterizes groups in which the weak normality is transitive for the subsets containing the centre, and groups in which the weak normality is transitive for the \(Q\)-complexes containing the centre. In particular, she puts these concepts in relation with the concept of distance of a group, introduced by her [in Rend., Sci. Mat. Fis. Chim. Geol. 112, 181-191 (1978; Zbl 0527.20030)].
