Let \(L^p\) be the Lebesgue space of \(p\)-integrable functions in the unit disc \({\mathbf D}\) with respect to the measure \[ d\mu_\alpha(z)= (\alpha+1) (1-|z|^2)^\alpha dA(z), \] here \(dA(z)\) is the normalized planar measure in \({\mathbf D}\) and \(\alpha>-1\). Denote by \(L^p_h\) the closed subspace of \(L^p\) consisting of harmonic functions. For the orthogonal projection \(P:L^2\to L^2_h\) and a function \(b\in L^1\) the commutator \(C_b\) with symbol \(b\) is defined on \(L^2\) by \[ C_b(f)= bPf-P(bf), \qquad f\in L^\infty. \] In turn the Hankel operator with symbol \(b\) is defined on \(L^2_h\) by \[ H_b(u)= bu-P(bu). \] The main result of the paper asserts that for any \(b\in L^1_h\) we have: a) \(H_b\) is bounded on \(L^p_h\) if and only if \(\sup_{z\in{\mathbf D}}|\nabla b(z)(1-|z|^2)|<\infty\); b) \(H_b\) is compact on \(L^p_h\) if and only if \(|\nabla b(z)(1-|z|^2)|\to 0\) as \(|z|\to 1\); c) \(H_b\) is in the Schatten \(p\)-class \((p>1)\) if and only if \(|\nabla b(z)(1-|z|^2)|\) belongs to \(L^p(d\lambda)\), where \(d\lambda(z)= (1-|z|^2)^{-2} dA(z)\). The proof of the main theorem depends on similar results proved for Bergman Hankel operators by Luecking.
