A method for estimating the value of the eddy viscosity coefficient of water flow is presented for the analysis of tidal current. The main features of the present method are described as follows: (1) The shallow water equation considering the viscosity term is employed as the numerical model. (2) The tidal current is modeled by assimilation of periodic flow with several constituents. (3) The performance function is assumed to be a norm of the difference between the observed and computed water elevation at the specified points. (4) The Fletcher-Reeves method, a conjugate gradient method, is applied to minimize the performance function. The value of the eddy viscosity coefficient in Tokyo Bay is estimated by the present method.
