    The author proves that if \(1< p< (n+ 2)/(n- 2)\) and the domain \(D\subset \mathbb{R}^n\) is of type \(R_n\), then there is a unique nontrivial positive solution for small \(\varepsilon> 0\) to the problem \[ - \varepsilon \Delta u= u^p- u\quad\text{in} \quad D,\quad u= 0\quad\text{on} \quad \partial D. \] The domain is of type \(R_n\) if \(0\in D\), \(D\) has a \(C^3\) boundary, \(D\) is invariant under the \(n\) reflections in the coordinate planes and is such that if \(1\leq i\leq n\) and \(0< t< s< t_i\), then \((I - P_i) D_{i, t}\supseteq (I- P_i) D_{i, s}\). Here, \(P_i\) is the orthogonal projection onto \(\text{span } e_i\), \(D_{i, s}= \{x\in D: x_i= s\}\), \(t_i= \text{sup}\{x_i: x\in D\}\), and \(\{e_i\}\) is the standard basis for \(\mathbb{R}^n\). The proof follows by examining the possible asymptotic behavior of positive solutions as \(\varepsilon\to 0\) and is reduced to several lemmas which utilize blow up arguments. The result is in contrast to other authors who have deduced multiple positive solutions for certain domains \(D\).
