For an odd prime \(p\) and a primitive \(p\)-th root \(\zeta\) of 1 Kummer's lemma implies a unit in \(\mathbb{Z}[\zeta]\) whose image in \(\mathbb{F}_p[\zeta]\) lies in \(\mathbb{F}_p\) to be a \(p\)-th power. It can be used for describing the kernel \(R_p\) of the natural map \((\mathbb{Z} C)^\times\to(\mathbb{F}_pC)^\times\) between the group of units in the respective group rings of the cyclic group \(C\) of order \(p\) [Can. Math. Bull. 32, No. 4, 486-489 (1989; Zbl 0684.16004), J. Pure Appl. Algebra 68, No. 3, 325-339 (1990; Zbl 0718.16027)]. In this paper the prime is \(p=2\) and the knowledge of \(R_2\) is exploited for proving that the circular units in \(\mathbb{Z} A\), where \(A\) is a finite abelian 2-group, are all constructible in a very precise sense. A unit is circular if its image under every character of \(A\) is a cyclotomic unit.
