Let \(M\) be a compact \(n\)-dimensional complex manifold, let \(A(M)\) be the Lie group of holomorphic automorphisms of \(M\), and let \(H(M)\) be the Lie algebra of \(A(M)\); \(H(M)\) consists of all holomorphic vector fields on \(M\). The Futaki invariant \(f: H(M)\to \mathbb{C}\) is an obstruction to the existence of a Kähler-Einstein (KE) metric; if \(M\) admits a KE metric, then \(f(X)= 0\) for any \(X\in H(M)\). The invariant \(f\) can be lifted to a group homomorphism from \(A(M)\) to \(\mathbb{C}/\mathbb{Z}\). In a previous paper, the author calculated \(2^{n+ 1} F\) and showed \(F\) was non-trivial even when \(H(M)= 0\). In the present paper, the author refines this formula to compute \(F\) itself. If \(M\) is a Kähler surface with \(c_1(M)> 0\), the author shows \(F\) vanishes if and only if \(M\) admits a KE metric. The author also shows that \(F\) vanishes for some Kähler manifolds of higher dimensions which have been shown to admit KE metrics. This leads support to the conjecture of Futaki that \(F\) as well as \(f\) is an obstruction to the existence of a KE metric on a compact Kähler manifold with \(c_1(M)> 0\).
