This paper presents data from two-dimensional direct numerical simulations of a freely propagating flame surface through isotropic turbulence. Data analysis was done with an emphasis on characterizing the coupling between the spectral distribution of turbulent energy and the structure of the flame surface. To simplify the analysis and simulations, this study considers a passive flame surface (i.e., no thermal expansion) passing through statistically stationary homogeneous isotropic turbulence. We believe that the simplification of constant density enables us to predict the spectral dynamics without introducing the enormous complications associated with significant density variations. Moreover, the qualitative features of the incompressible model system are reasonably close to those in a real flame, hence the results presented herein will provide a point of departure for more realistic studies in the future.
