The Atiyah-Hirzebruch theorem on vanishing of the \(\widehat {A}\)-genus [\textit{M. F. Atiyah} and \textit{F. Hirzebruch}, in `Essays Topol. Relat. Top.', 18-28 (1970; Zbl 0193.52401)] has been extended by \textit{R. Bott} and \textit{C. Taubes} [J. Am. Math. Soc. 2, 137-186 (1989; Zbl 0667.57009)] to a theorem on the rigidity of elliptic genera. As a generalization of the signature formula \textit{F. Hirzebruch} and \textit{P. Slodowy} [Geom. Dedicata 35, 309-343 (1990; Zbl 0712.57010)] described a relation between the elliptic genera of a manifold with an involution and the elliptic genera of the fixed point set. Following the ideas of \textit{H. Ku} and \textit{M. Ku} [in `Transformation groups', Lect. Notes Math. 1375, 198-206 (1989; Zbl 0671.57025)] the author of the paper under review defines generalized elliptic genera and then he generalizes the Hirzebruch-Slodowy theorem by using the methods of \textit{W. Browder} and \textit{W.-C. Hsiang} [Invent. Math. 65, 411-424 (1982; Zbl 0519.57034)] which were applied to generalize the Atiyah-Hirzebruch theorem on vanishing of the \(\widehat {A}\)-genus to a theorem on vanishing of the higher \(\widehat {A}\)-genus. As a result, the author obtains some theorems on vanishing of higher elliptic genera and higher twisted \(\widehat {A}\)-genera. Moreover, the author generalizes the elliptic genera of level \(N\) for stable almost complex manifolds and obtains a similar vanishing theorem.
