Let \(\Omega\) be a bounded open set in the complex plane, let \(2\leq p<\infty\), and let \(q\) be the conjugate index of \(p\). The Bergman space \(L^p_a (\Omega)\) is the Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on \(\Omega\) that are \(p\)th-power integrable with respect to area measure. Evaluation at each point \(\lambda\) of \(\Omega\) is continuous; the paper gives estimates of the growth of the norm of this functional as \(\lambda\) tends to the boundary of \(\Omega\). Let \(G(x, y)\) be the Bessel kernel, the inverse Fourier transform of \((1+ x^2+ y^2 )^{-{1\over 2}}\). For each set \(E\) in \(\mathbb{C}\), the Bessel \(q\)-capacity is defined as \[ C_q (E)= \inf_f \int |f(x, y)|^q dx dy \] where \(f\in L^q (\mathbb{R}^2)\), \(f\geq 0\), and \(\int G(t- x, s-y) f(t, s)dt ds\geq 1\) for \((x, y)\in E\). Assume that \(\Omega\) contains a triangle with vertex at zero, and let \(A_k\) be the annulus \(\{z: 2^{-k-1}\leq |z|< 2^{-k}\}\). Assume also that, for \(p>2\), \[ \sum_{k\to \infty} 2^{k(2- q)} C_q (A_k \setminus \Omega)< \infty \] (for \(p=2\) this becomes \(\sum^\infty_{k=1} kC(A_k \setminus \Omega)< \infty)\). Then the main result of the paper is that, as \(\lambda\) tends to zero from inside the triangle, the norm of evaluation at \(\lambda\) is comparable to \[ \Biggl[\sum^\infty_{k=1} 2^{q\min (k,\log_2 {1\over {|\lambda|}})} C_q (A_k \setminus \Omega) \Biggr]^{1\over q}. \]
