The author constructs an elliptic curve of the form \[ b(t,t_1,t_2,t_3) y^2 = x^3 + a(t,t_1,t_2,t_3) (x^2+x)+1 \] over \(\mathbb{Q}(t,t_1,t_2,t_3)\) with 6 rational points and shows (by suitably specializing the parameters) that these points are generically independent. Since by work of \textit{J.-F. Mestre} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 313, 171-174 (1991; Zbl 0749.14026)] and \textit{K. Nagao} [Proc. Japan Acad., Ser. A 70, 152-153 (1994; Zbl 0848.14015)] it is known that there are elliptic curves over \(\mathbb{Q} (t_1,t_2,t_3,t_4)\) of generic rank at least 12 and over \(\mathbb{Q} (t)\) of generic rank at least 13; the main interest of the example given here probably lies in its special form and in the way of constructing it, which makes use of a curve of genus 2 covering the elliptic curve \(y^2=x^3 + ax^2+ax+1\) in two different ways.
