This paper obtains a number of results on the existence of the group inverse \(M^\#\) of a block matrix \(M\) [see, for example, \textit{S. L. Campbell} and \textit{C. D. Meyer jun.}, Generalized inverses of linear transformations'', Dover, New York (1991; Zbl 0732.15003)]. These results are applied to give the following criterion (Prop. 5) for a triangular matrix \(T\) to have a group inverse. Let \(\theta\) (respectively, \(\eta\)) be the sets of row indices where the diagonal entries of \(T\) are 0 (respectively, nonzero). For any sets \(\alpha\), \(\beta\) of indices, let \(T^\alpha_\beta\) denote the submatrix of \(T\) with row indices from \(\alpha\) and column indices from \(\beta\). Then \(T\) has a group inverse if and only if \(T^\theta_\theta= T^\theta_\eta (T^\eta_\eta)^{-1} T^\eta_\theta\).
