The authors develop a frequency domain theory which allows for analysis and design of sampled-data control systems including their intersample behaviour. The main difficulty to be overcome results from the periodicity of \(e^{i\omega t}\) which leads to the problem that a sampled-data systems maps a single sinusoidal input of this from to the continuous-time output consisting of infinitely many sinusoidal components. Equations relating outputs of a closed-loop system to its inputs in the fequency domain are derived and their solution is given in an explicit form. From this, a method is established to evaluate the quality of sampled-data feedback control in the frequency domain. The matrix expressions of the relevant operators characterize also the ability of rejecting disturbances, the degree of robust stability and give the effect of noise detection. The paper concludes with a short report on advances in the investigation of sampled-data systems with both continuous-time and discrete-time inputs which are based on the results presented in this paper.
