The formal generalization to \(n\) dimensions is discussed of ``free rigid body motion about a fixed point'': it concerns a dynamical system for the ``angular momentum matrix'' on the Lie algebra \(so(n)\). It is shown first that \(so(n)\) carries a family of compatible Poisson tensors labelled by the symmetric matrices. Two of these provide a bi-Hamiltonian formulation for the system under consideration, directly on \(so(n)\) (as opposed to the bi-Hamiltonian description on the extended space \(sl(n)\) of previous approaches). The authors further discuss an extension of the hierarchy \(m_r\) of Mishchenko integrals to negative integers \(r\). In fact, along with the kinetic energy function \(m_1\), it is the function \(m_{-1}\) which gives the second Hamiltonian for the newly proposed bi-Hamiltonian model. Also, the set of Manakov integrals is introduced and shown to satisfy a recursion relation with respect to the two Poisson structures under consideration. All Mishchenko and Manakov functions are mutually in involution with respect to both structures and the Manakov integrals are sufficient in number to arrive at the conclusion of complete integrability.
