The author considers the equation \[ u_{tt}+M([u(t)])Au+R([u(t)])A^\alpha u+ N([u(t)])Bu_t=0,\tag{1} \] where \[ [u(t)]=((u,u_t),(Au,u_t),\;|A^{1/2}u|^2,\;|A^{1/2}u_t|^2,\;|Au|^2), \] and \(A\) is a positive selfadjoint operator, \(B\) is a symmetrical operator which commutes with \(A\), and \(M\), \(N\), \(R\) are \(C^1\)-nonnegative functions. The author proves that the initial value problem is locally well posed if the initial data are from \(D(A^2)\times D(A^{1/2})\), and it is globally well posed for small data. In the global case the exponential decay of the solution is shown as the time tends to infinity. The other aim of this paper is to prove that the solution of the initial value problem for (1) belongs to the space \(C^\infty(]0,\infty[; D(A^k))\) for every \(k\in N\) if \(M\), \(N\), and \(R\) are \(C^\infty\)-functions.
