A commutative ring is said to be of bounded module type if every module of finite type is a direct sum of indecomposable modules and \(\{\mu (M)|M\) is an indecomposable module\} is bounded (where \(\mu (M)\) denotes the minimal number of generators of \(M)\). It is known that a local ring of bounded module type is uniserial that is, the set of ideals is totally ordered with respect to the inclusion [\textit{R. B. Warfield} jun., Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 25, 167-172 (1970; Zbl 0204.05902)]. A uniserial ring is said to be almost maximal if every module of finite type is a direct sum of cyclic modules. It is known that certain valuation rings of bounded module type are almost maximal. -- The purpose of the paper is to show the following theorem: Let \(A\) be a uniserial ring whose maximal ideal is finitely generated. Then \(A\) is of bounded module type if and only if \(A\) is almost maximal.
